Route Surveys

Overview

GB Permit Solutions boasts the largest network of pilot car companies

Often, our clients rely on us to extend our expertise by conducting a route survey before finalizing their permits. A route survey ensures the safety of all parties involved during the transport of oversize or overweight loads.

Typically, a vehicle, often a pilot car or escort company, must travel the exact proposed route to perform a thorough route survey. GB Permit Solutions’ transportation consultants, or permit agents, collaborate with specialized trucking companies, state, provincial, and local permit offices to determine the optimal route. This process takes into account the dimensions of the oversize load, transportation regulations, road closures, construction, and any other size and weight restrictions along the route. If issues arise, our route surveyors work closely with our Pilot Car Department and consultants to find alternative routes or solutions.

In most states, provinces, and local jurisdictions, certified pilot car drivers are required to conduct route surveys. At GB Permit Solutions, we leverage our extensive network of certified pilots to meet these mandatory requirements. Our permit agents coordinate closely with our dedicated East and West Coast Pilot Car Departments to secure qualified pilots for route survey requests.

Performing a route survey before transporting a specialized load or superload helps identify potential challenges such as low bridges, narrow roadways, railroad crossings, and overhead obstructions. This proactive approach ensures the safety of the driver, other motorists, and public property.
